Transition Plan Update, Number 10 (29 September 2025)
|
Dear colleague,
This update focuses entirely on the BA portfolio. Our new BA portfolio will soon be one of the cornerstones of our resilient faculty. The full breadth of our humanities knowledge and expertise is incredibly important in today's and tomorrow's world. That is why we are building a faculty that is sustainable and future-proof. We have already come a long way; the final phase of planning for the new BA portfolio has started and will be completed in February 2026. This will be followed by a phase of implementation within the programmes, so that students can start the renewed BA education in 2027.
We invite all colleagues in education, research and support to contribute their ideas, because everyone's cooperation is desperately needed. We will be asking you for your input in various ways in the coming period, but you are also welcome to provide input unsolicited, for example via transitie.gw@uu.nl. We want to do this together, based on our shared sense of urgency, which was clearly felt in the faculty last year.
We assume that we will be able to complete the process we started last year and will continue to strive and work to prevent a reorganisation. At the moment, everything is going according to plan. Should this change unexpectedly, we will inform you accordingly. Kind regards, The Faculty Board

Completion of phase 2 – inspiring vision for the humanities of the future
◼ ◼ ◼ |
The BA portfolio project group has completed phase 2, thanks to the valuable input of the small programmes subcommittees, the sounding board group, the sector plan core teams, the research directors, the student success team, the advisors from Education Advice and Training, those present at the various meetings and departmental discussions, as well as the members of the Finance & HR project group.
The Faculty Board has taken note of the progress report with exceptional appreciation and endorses the convincing vision that we must educate students to become resilient, self-aware thinkers and doers who contribute to a more just, inclusive and sustainable society. And that our students, once they graduate, will be proud humanities scholars who can collaborate across borders and play their part in solving the major, complex problems of today and tomorrow, for example in the areas of security, migration, social inequality, the future of democracy and the open society, and AI. Progress report The progress report (PDF) contains a comprehensive summary, including the decisions taken by the Faculty Board. You can read about:
- The vision that guides the reforms in the BA portfolio.
- An overview of the renewed BA structure.
- An expository essay of the progress made in further developing the innovative elements of the renewed BA structure: integrated tutoring (now renamed as 'personal and professional development learning trajectory'), BA/MA thesis and bridging courses.

- Working group on the learning trajectory for personal and professional development
- Working group on alternative forms of graduation and an effective structure for the graduation process
- Working group on the ‘verbindingspakket’
- Working group on the implementation of the BA structure
Assignment for phase 3 The assignment for phase 3 (PDF) contains the Faculty Board's decisions on the proposals in the progress report on phase 2. The appendices contain an explanation of the financial frameworks, the project organisation and a detailed timetable.
